Why do we need to think about energetic protection? Whether or not you consider yourself an empath or spiritually sensitive person, you are still affected by negative energy. We are all made of energy and therefore naturally conduct the energy of the environment or people around us.
In this article, I am going to share my favorite energetic protection techniques that you can use when you want to protect yourself from the negative energy of people, places, and situations. I have also added an energy cleansing self-care ritual that you can do when you feel the need to ‘reset’ and release built-up negative energy. Combining the two shielding techniques with the cleansing ritual provides a complete energetic protection package.
Why do we Need Energetic Protection?
As a sensitive person myself, I certainly suffer when I experience stress and conflict. However, after getting to know myself better and understanding what it means to be an introverted empath, I have practiced many energetic protection techniques so that I am as minimally impacted as possible.
You may recognize this as times when you have had your vitality drained by an ‘energy vampire’ – a person who seems to suck the life force out of you whenever you spend time together. Or, you may feel drained when you have to spend time in places with lots of people, electric lighting, or little fresh air (I’m looking at you, subway system…) You may even feel an impact from small conflicts or stressful situations.
The Dangers of Negative Energy Accumulation
If you constantly absorb negative energy from others and your environment without cleansing it or shielding yourself in any way, you will develop physical, emotional, and spiritual symptoms associated with too much negative energy. These symptoms include:
- Mental health issues such as anxiety and depression
- Exhaustion and fatigue
- Restlessness and inability to relax
- Insomnia and broken sleep
- Overwhelm and confusion
- Tension and muscular pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Stomach pain and digestive issues
- Adrenal Fatigue
As you can see, without putting the right energetic protection techniques in place, you are susceptible to a whole range of health conditions.
Here are my top three favorite cleansing and energetic protection techniques that I use on a regular basis. Try them out and see what ones you like best, or use them as inspiration to come up with your own unique energetic protection rituals.
1: Energetic Protection Visualization
There are lots of ways to use visualization to shield yourself from negative energy. It is quick to do, works well, and can be done by anyone. Don’t worry about it blocking out ALL energy – the shield is made of positive energy and therefore allows positive energy to pass through in both directions.
Sphere of Light
Prepare and ground yourself by taking a few full, deep breaths. When you are ready, visualize yourself inside a sphere of brilliant, sparkling light. The light can be any color you like. I love to imagine a light pink light shimmering with gold sparkles, kind of like rose quartz flecked with gold.
You may like to select the color based on a particular effect – blue is a healing color, orange is motivating and symbolizes burning ambition, yellow is a cheerful and optimistic color, purple makes you feel sumptuous and regal, green connects you to Mother Earth, etc.
Feel this shield of energetic protection solidifying and strengthening as time goes on. Inside the sphere, you feel completely safe and protected and bolstered by the positive energy it emits. You know that no negative, toxic, or harmful energy can penetrate its shimmering walls, yet positive, loving energy passes through unhindered.
If you wish, you can imagine that your sphere of energetic protection has a Divine hook up to the universe, providing an unlimited source of loving energy. This could be symbolized by a golden wire extending from the top of your sphere upwards into the cosmos, connecting to Divine cosmic energy.
Crystals are excellent energetic protection tools. Gemstones emit powerful energies that we can use to shield, cleanse, and heal, and we can use them in a variety of ways. Their energetic frequencies blend with our own and produce a multitude of positive effects, such as happiness, abundance, healing, hormone balancing, increased energy, focus, mental clarity, and spiritual connection.
Here are my top five energy healing and protection stones:
1: Smokey quartz
Smokey quartz is extremely grounding and protective. It is great for protecting the aura from absorbing toxic energy and transforming negative energy into positive. It is both energetically and physically detoxifying, and it helps to protect against electromagnetic radiation. Smokey quartz is also an excellent mental wellbeing stone. It helps to release fear and worry, lift mild depression, and reduce feelings of anxiety. On the flipside, it helps to promote feelings of positivity, joy, and clarity of mind.
2: Black Tourmaline
Black tourmaline is a powerful negative energy repellent. It can deflect negative energy from other people and also electromagnetic radiation. Black tourmaline helps to balance the emotions, boost vitality, release tension, and diminish fear.
Obsidian can form an energetic shield of protection around you, blocking psychic attacks. Additionally, obsidian helps to release past traumas and clear emotional blockages that may be causing negative energy from within. It also boosts inner strength, resilience, and compassion.
4: Tiger’s Eye
Tiger’s eye combines protection with good fortune. It dispels fear, anxiety, and balances mood swings. It enhances courage, willpower, and clarity while providing a grounding and stabilizing effect. Tiger’s eye is a useful problem-solving stone because it focuses the mind and assists clear objective thought.
5: Green Fluorite
Green fluorite neutralizes negative energy and cleanses the aura. It helps to imbue you with a sense of positivity, confidence, and wellbeing. Green fluorite boosts the immune system, increases mental clarity and concentration, and balances hormones. It also has the power to reharmonize every chakra.
How to Use Crystals for Energetic Protection
There are many ways you can use crystals for energetic protection. Here are my three favorites:
1: Wear it as Jewelry
You can purchase jewelry featuring almost any gemstone these days. I love wearing crystals that resonate with the heart chakra (such as rose quartz and aventurine) on a long chain so that it is in contact with my heart chakra. You can also wear them on a shorter chain or ribbon to connect with the throat chakra.
2: Keep it in a Pocket
This method is great for tumble stones or pieces that cannot be worn. Also, it is useful for bringing the crystal closer to the lower chakras. I was feeling particularly sensitive recently and had to go into town, so I placed my piece of black tourmaline in my jeans pocket and it really helped to keep me grounded and protected.
3: Make a Grid of Protection in Your Home
There are many different ways to do this, a quick internet search will yield endless inspiration. Black tourmaline is particularly useful for protection grids. A simple way to start is to place a medium to large piece of black tourmaline in all four corners of your home, and above all doors. This set up provides a grid of energetic protection and ‘scans’ people as they enter, absorbing any negativity.
3: Energy Cleansing Bathing Ritual
This ritual is based around the cleansing properties of salt. It is also known as a ‘spiritual bath.’ Salt is amazing for cleansing and grounding, and it is one of the best ways to cleanse your crystals of negative energy. We are simply using this premise and applying it to ourselves, in the form of a bathing ritual. You can use natural sea salt or pink Himalayan salt.
In addition to the powerful cleansing and detoxifying effects of salt, we will also use other energetic helpers, such as essential oils, herbs, crystals, and intention. This bath is both physically and energetically cleansing. It rebalances the chakras, relieves tension, reduces stress, and removes energy blockages and past traumas.
Components of the Bathing Ritual
1: Salt of your choice
Don’t use table salt or Epsom salt, which isn’t actually sodium chloride but magnesium sulfate. You can combine Epsom salt with sea salt or Himalayan salt, if you like, but don’t leave out the real salt altogether.
2: Herbs (fresh, dried, or essential oils)
It is outside the scope of this article to describe every herb and its healing properties, but if you are interested you can find more information here. The basics you may like to consider are:
- Lavender (calming, reduces stress, promotes sleep)
- Chamomile (calming, reduces stress, promotes sleep)
- Rosemary (cleansing, reduces stress, improves memory
- Rose (healing, balances heart chakra)
- Frankincense (healing, improves spiritual connection)
- Sage (cleansing, releases negativity, boosts mood)
You can purchase ready-made bath oils that contain a mixture of essential oils for different purposes, i.e., cleansing, relaxation, energy, etc. Feel free to use one of these, but ensure that it does not contain chemicals or synthetic fragrances.
You can choose any of the energetic protection crystals mentioned above or others that resonate with you. When placed in the bath, the energetic vibration of the stone infuses the water and reharmonizes your own energetic field.
There are crystals that should not be placed in water as they dissolve, such as coral, calcite, selenite, azurite, kyanite, angelite, most of the crystals with ‘ite’ at the end can’t get wet.
Additionally, some crystals can leak toxins in the form of high levels of minerals. These include lapis lazuli, hematite, and tangerine quartz. If in doubt, check with your favorite local or online crystal shop, or consult a crystal book.
Safe crystals to use in water include the quartz family: rose quartz, amethyst, clear quartz, citrine, smokey quartz, (not tangerine quartz though), and others such as aventurine, obsidian, agate, jasper, and tourmaline.
4: Additional Items
These items help to create a calm and healing atmosphere, aiding relaxation and relieving stress. Select any or all of the following:
- Soft music
- Guided meditation
- Herbal tea
How to Perform the Bathing Ritual
1: Begin this ritual by gathering all your components and ensuring that you will not be disturbed for a couple of hours.
2: Make sure that your tub is properly clean. You may also like to have a quick shower first to cleanse yourself.
3: Set the scene by lighting your candles and incense, playing your music or meditation, and making your tea, while the tub fills with warm water.
4: Add your salt and swirl to dissolve while you set your intention. This can be something as simple as intending that all the negative energy be removed from you and that you are prepared for future energetic protection. When the tub is full, add your chosen oils, herbs, and crystals. Then it’s time to get in.
5: Relax for 20-30 minutes, allowing the salt to cleanse you and energies of the herbs and crystals to infuse and revitalize. Hold your intention in the front of your mind as you sip your tea and relax. If you like, you can visualize tension and negative energy being drawn out of you and into the water.
6: After 20-30 minutes, or whenever feels right, get out and empty the tub. I like to imagine all the negativity being swept away down the plughole. Clean your tub afterward to ensure that all traces are gone, and to remove any oil or herb residue. Repeat once a week or whenever you feel guided by your intuition.
I have shared three of my favorite energetic protection and cleansing techniques: the sphere of light visualization, wearing crystals and using them in your home, and a scrumptious sacred energy cleansing bathing ritual. I hope these methods of energy management help you in your daily life and empower you to choose which energy you let in and which you refuse. You do have this choice, and you can exercise it any time you wish with these three simple techniques.
